Fourth Degree- Patriotism

About The Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus

Each degree of the Knights of Columbus is founded on a core virtue. The Fourth Degree is dedicated to Patriotism and is often known as “The Patriotic Degree.” Established in New York on February 22, 1900, the Fourth Degree represents the visible, public expression of Catholic men committed to both their faith and their country.

Who Can Join?

To become a Fourth Degree Sir Knight, a member must be:

  • A Third Degree member in good standing
  • A practicing and exemplary Catholic
  • A citizen of sound character who embraces the responsibilities of civic life

The Fourth Degree is not simply an honorary title—it is a call to active service. It challenges members to stand for the Church while promoting responsible citizenship and love of country.

Mission and Goals

The mission of the Fourth Degree is to promote Catholicism and Patriotism side by side. This is carried out through several key goals:

  • Strengthen the patriotic spirit within our communities
  • Educate members and the public on the teachings of the Church and the history of our nation
  • Exemplify the highest ideals of citizenship
  • Defend against influences that threaten our values, faith, and moral principles
  • Support lawful authority and recognize excellence in public service

Visible Service in Church and Community

Fourth Degree Sir Knights are often the most visible representatives of the Knights of Columbus. Their service includes:

  • Participation in Eucharistic processions
  • Veterans Day and Memorial Day Masses and ceremonies
  • Flag-folding ceremonies
  • Honor Guard service (a distinct privilege of the Fourth Degree)
  • Chalice ceremonies honoring deceased Sir Knights
  • Volunteer support for veterans and community initiatives
  • Public witness at Pro-Life events
  • Commemorations honoring the sacrifices of past generations

Through these acts, Sir Knights live out the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism.

The Purpose of the Fourth Degree

The primary purpose of the Fourth Degree is to foster a deep love of country through responsible citizenship. This mission is fulfilled through active participation in local Fourth Degree groups known as Assemblies, where members unite in service to both Church and nation.

A Call to Action

We encourage all members of Council 10540 to consider advancing to the Fourth Degree. If you are a Third Degree Knight, take the next step and embrace the honor and responsibility of becoming a Sir Knight.

In a time when faith, family, and freedom face ongoing challenges, the need for strong Catholic men willing to stand publicly for their beliefs has never been greater.

Now is the time to answer the call.
Stand for your faith. Serve your community. Honor your country.
